Évora (Wine & Cork)

Évora - the capital of the south-central region of Portugal. The Alentejo

Évora is the capital of the south-central region of Portugal, the Alentejo. In the historic center of the city is the ancient Roman temple of Évora (also known as Templo de Diana). Nearby, whitewashed houses surround Évora Cathedral, a massive Gothic structure begun in the 12th century. The Church of São Francisco has Gothic and Baroque architecture, along with the Chapel of Bones.

Its well-preserved historic center is one of the richest monuments in Portugal, worthy of the epithet City Museum. In 1986, the historic center of the city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

On this tour you can stroll peacefully through the historic center of Évora at Praça do Giraldo, an icon in honor of Geraldo Geraldes, the ""Homem Sem Medo"", because he conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167. Sé de Évora, the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal and has no parallel in the rest of the country.

The Temple of Diana, one of the greatest and best preserved Roman temples in the entire Iberian Peninsula. It's a kind of calling card, also known as Capela dos Ossos, a scary chapel for being completely decorated with human bones, it was built in the 17th century on the initiative of three Franciscan friars.

As Portugal is the world's largest producer of cork, you will now be able to learn a little more about this material.

Leaving Évora, the tour continues to Fabrica da Cortiça, in Azaruja, where you will learn about this versatile and sustainable material, from which many and varied pieces are produced.
