Mafra is famous for its convent-palace, built by King João V in the 18th century

About

Mafra is famous for its convent-palace, built by King João V in the 18th century, this grand monument, built at a time of great royal prosperity, as a result of the exploration of gold and diamonds in Brazil, is a masterpiece of the city, Portuguese Baroque.

The Royal Convent of Mafra, later renamed Mafra National Palace, is an imposing work from the reign of King João V and the most important symbol of Baroque architecture in Portugal.
Located in the heart of the village of Mafra - in the homonymous place of the king who built it -, it is the only National Monument that includes a Royal Palace, a Basilica and a Convent.

The Palace-Convent of Mafra has accumulated several distinctions over the years. Classified as a National Monument in 1910, it was a finalist in the election of the Seven Wonders of Portugal in 2007, I have won UNESCO recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.

Thanks to its proximity to Lisbon, the municipality of Mafra becomes attractive to people, so it is not surprising to increase the population and displacement movements. Events such as the ASP World Tour and the Waveski National Circuit bring prestige and define Mafra as one of the emerging municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

In Mafra you can visit the monument, nearby there is the Tapada de Mafra, it was created in 1747 with the aim of providing an adequate involvement to the Monument, to constitute a leisure and summer space for the King and his court and also to provide firewood and other products for the Convent.

Leaving Mafra, there will be a visit to the Museu-Aldeia José Franco, one of the most recognized museums in the country.

From here, our tour continues to Ericeira, a fishing village of great importance to the region, and which today is known for surfing due to the waves in the region. Ericeira is also the first world surf reserve in Europe and the second in the world.

The Convento Real de Mafra is closed on Tuesdays, for which there will be no visit to its interior.
